As Coastline Academy works to eradicate car crashes, one factor that plays into that is staying safe on the road. Drivers can do this by reviewing these ten safety tips for driving. Whether you have been driving for 20 years or you just got your driver's license, it's always a good idea to reflect back on the basics of traffic safety from time to time. These driving tips can help you make sure you are being careful enough on the road to keep yourself and other drivers and pedestrians as safe as possible.

10 Safety Tips For Driving

Regardless of how experienced you are as a driver, safety is something everyone should keep in mind at all times. When you are behind the wheel of a vehicle, you are responsible for keeping the roads safe for yourself, passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians. Here are some safety tips to remember when driving:

  1. Buckle Up - Wearing your seat belt is very important when it comes to vehicle safety. Besides the possibility of being fined for not wearing one, you are also more likely to get injured in an accident if you aren't wearing a seat belt.
  2. Do Not Text and Drive - It is illegal to text and drive in 48 states, which shows you how dangerous this action is. It is never acceptable to send text messages while driving, as the texts can wait.
  3. Use Turn Signals - Other drivers on the road do not know what you are going to do next. By making sure you use your turn signals, you are letting the other drivers on the road know of your intentions, whether it is making a turn or changing lanes.
  4. Avoid Assumptions - Along the same terms as using your blinker, you should not assume other drivers are going to use their turn signals all the time. Other drivers are not always going to do what you think they should do, so never assume and play it safe at all times.
  5. Follow Traffic Signals - Always pay attention to and obey traffic lights and stop signs.
  6. Come to a Complete Stop - On that note, when you see a stop sign or a red light, you should make sure to bring your vehicle to a complete stop. Even if you think there are no other vehicles around, remember not to assume anything and always obey the rules and play it safe.
  7. Never Drive Under the Influence - If you have been drinking, you should not be getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. This includes being under the influence of certain types of prescription or non-prescription drugs.
  8. Obey Speed Limits - When you are driving, it is important to drive the posted speed limit at all times. The speed limits have been researched and selected to maximize safety for drivers and for the people in the houses and businesses in the areas where roadways are located.
  9. Stay Alert - You want to actively be paying attention to your own actions and those of the drivers around you when you are driving.
  10. Be Patient - Many car crashes are caused by impatient drivers who are rushing to get from Point A to Point B. You may be late for an appointment, but safety is more important. You should always try to leave earlier and allow time to get to your destination. If you were to get into a car crash, that definitely would put you even more behind schedule. Be patient and follow the rules of the road when driving.

By keeping these ten driving tips and all the rules of the road in mind, you will be on your way to being a responsible and conscientious driver.
