How Many Hours Do You Need With A Driving Instructor In Illinois?

If you are looking to become a new driver in Illinois, then you are probably working at getting everything in place so you are fully prepared to get your driver's license. During this time, you might be wondering how many hours do you need with a driving instructor in Illinois? We give you the details below!

Instruction Permit

For teens in Illinois, if you are 15 years of age or older, then you are eligible for an instruction permit. To get this permit, you must enroll in an approved driver education course, as well as pass a vision and written test. You must hold the instruction permit for a minimum of nine months and you must not acquire any driving convictions during the nine-month permit phase. This instruction permit is valid for up to two years.

How Many Hours Of Driving Lessons Does Illinois Require?

Once you have passed the vision and written test, the Illinois SOS will issue you your instruction permit. This allows you to start your behind-the-wheel driving lessons. The behind-the-wheel driving lessons are part of the Driver's Ed course you enroll in, which includes 30 hours of in-classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel training.

In addition to the six hours of driving lessons needed with a professional driving instructor, teens are also required to complete 50 hours of driving practice. These 50 hours can be completed under the supervision of a parent or adult age 21 or older with a valid driver’s license. Of those 50 hours, 10 of them have to be completed at night.

Initial Licensing Phase In Illinois

After completing a minimum of 56 hours of driving lessons and practice, you are now eligible to take the road test to move on to the Initial Licensing Phase in Illinois. This phase is for 16 or 17 year olds and contains requirements and criteria to follow before moving on to the Full Licensing Phase in Illinois.

How Many Hours Needed With Driving Instructor In Illinois?

To sum it up, new drivers in Illinois will need to complete a minimum of 56 hours of driving time before moving on to the Initial Licensing Phase.
