Is It Mandatory To Go To Driving School In Texas?
Being eligible to get your driver's license is an exciting time for any new driver. For each state, there are laws and requirements to follow in order to get your driver license, which are all in place to make you a safe and responsible driver on the road. If you are in Texas, you might be wondering is it mandatory to go to driving school in Texas? Find out here!
The Answer: Yes!
To help get those safe and responsible drivers on the road, the Texas DPS does require all driver's license applicants that are under 18 to complete a state-approved driver's education course. This course includes at least 32 hours of classroom instruction, as well as at least 44 hours of behind-the-wheel training.
Driving School Requirements
Besides completing the classroom instruction, new teen drivers will also be required to complete behind-the-wheel training. The 44 required hours consists of:
- Seven hours of behind-the-wheel lessons, which Coastline Academy offers
- Seven hours of in-car observation
- 30 hours of additional practice time, which includes 10 hours of driving at night
Completing Driver's Training In Texas
When it comes to teenagers, most will get their practice hours completed with their parents. However, there are options available to successfully completing the behind-the-wheel instruction, observation and classroom requirements from the Texas DPS. These are:
- Private driving schools, like Coastline Academy
- Public high schools
- Parent-taught driver's education (PTDE)
Depending on your situation, all of the options can be a great choice for you. If you do use a private driving school, make sure they are state-approved, which Coastline Academy is.
