Personalized Driving Lessons in Austin: Private and Manual Options
Some readers may remember their driving lessons as an uncomfortable experience when they were a teen. More often than not, student drivers were crammed three or four to a car, limiting the amount of actual experience they received behind the wheel and causing no small amount of anxiety. While these driving fulfilled the technical requirements to take the driving test, they may not have been the most fulfilling or educational experience!
Just like learning a musical instrument, investing in private instruction with a driving school when taking driver education can reap long-term rewards. Not only will you or your teen be able to schedule lessons around your busy lives, but teens will benefit from a calm and controlled in-car environment that is tailored to their needs and abilities as they learn to become safe and confident drivers and prepare for that all-important road test.
Private Driving Lessons: Austin
Coastline Academy is an Austin driving school that offers individualized driving instruction for all of our students, from teens to adults. Thinking of signing up for private lessons before taking your in-car road test? Read ahead to learn about the benefits of private in-car training with an authorized driving school.
The Facts
Before diving into all the ways private driving lessons can help you or your teen, let’s review the behind-the-wheel lesson requirements in Austin.
According to the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration, all drivers holding a learner’s license who are under 18 years of age must take a total of 14 hours of driver training before they will be allowed to take the driving test. These lessons are comprised of 7 hours of behind-the-wheel training and 7 hours of observation and are conducted in two-hour blocks, which are split between the observation period and behind-the-wheel activities. (Remember, there are three types of driver's licenses: the learner's license, the provisional license, and a full license).
Drivers 18 and older are not subject to any required driving lessons, but we at Coastline highly recommend signing up for behind-the-wheel lessons before attempting the road test.
What Are the Advantages of the Seven Lesson Structure?
While seven lessons may seem like a lot, there are several advantages to the Texas structure, especially when these lessons are taken with a private instructor.
Coastline’s personalized approach allows students to spread out their lessons to best fit their schedules and give them time to practice their skills in between sessions. Spaced repetition, or spaced learning, has been acknowledged as one of the most effective learning strategies, meaning Coastline’s seven-lesson structure will allow students the time and resources to hone their skills behind the wheel.
Will I Have to Share My Lesson Time at a Private Driving School?
Yes, it’s true that in Austin, if you are under 18, you will need to share your lesson time with another student in the car. And we understand this can be a bit nerve-wracking! Your lesson observation period, however, is a great time to not only observe your peer’s driving, but also assess road situations such as traffic patterns, road signs, and the behaviors (good and bad!) of other drivers.
This isn’t to say your time in the back seat will be passive! Coastline’s certified driving instructors are trained to engage both the behind-the-wheel and observing student during the training time, meaning all Coastline lessons are not just one, but two hours of individualized, critical driver’s education.
