Minor Permits In Colorado
For minor permits in Colorado, they are valid for three years. They grant conditional, limited driving privileges for drivers under age 21 who are learning how to drive. You will be required to successfully pass the written test before a permit can be issued. Permit holders must drive with a licensed driver over the age of 21 in the vehicle with them. You will need to schedule an appointment to obtain your instruction permit.
Obtaining Your Permit
The first step to getting your driver's license in Colorado is to obtain your Minor Permit. For this, the requirements are based upon your age.
If you are 14.5 years old, but less than 15 years and 6 months, then the State of Colorado requires you to:
- Pre-register for a CO permit
- Attend and complete a DMV-approved 30-hour Drivers Ed course.
- Once you turn 15, you must pass a written test.
If you are 15 years and 6 months, but less than 16 years of age, then the State of Colorado requires you to:
- Pre-register for a CO permit
- Attend and complete a pre-qualification four-hour Driver Awareness Program that is DMV-approved OR attend and complete a DMV-approved 30-hour Driver Education course.
- Pass a written test
If you are 16 years of age, then the State of Colorado requires you to:
- Pass a written test

Based on the information above, the soonest you can get your permit in Colorado is at 15 years old. You can start taking the Driver's Ed course at 14.5 years old, but you will not be able to take the written test until you are 15 years old.
