You have been waiting for this moment for what seems like your whole life, but it is finally time for you to get behind the wheel for the first time ever. This can be a stressful and confusing time, so we are going to start you on the right path. You will need to start with your permit, so what do you take to Ohio BMV to get your temporary permit? Find out below!

Temporary Permit – Under Age 18

If you are at least 15 years and six months old, then you may go to any driver exam station to take the knowledge test and vision screening to begin the temporary permit process. Before taking the test, applicants must provide proof of:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number (if assigned)

If you have an Ohio identification card, you must surrender it when a temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC) is issued.

Knowledge Test and Vision Screening

To obtain your TIPIC, you must pass both the knowledge test and vision screening. The knowledge test is 40 multiple-choice questions about motor vehicle regulations and traffic signs. You must answer 75% of the questions correctly to pass.

Once the knowledge test and vision screening are passed, the applicant can proceed to a deputy registrar license agency to purchase a TIPIC within 60 days of passing the test. Applicants must provide proof of:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Social Security number (if assigned)
  • Ohio residency
  • Citizenship or legal presence

In addition, the applicant’s parent or guardian must present identification (driver license or ID card) to co-sign for the TIPIC. Again, the Acceptable Documents page can be used for a full list of identity documents and links to use the Ohio BMV interactive process to assist you with what to bring to a deputy registrar agency.

Failing The Test

If you do happen to fail the knowledge test, you must wait at least 24 hours before retesting. There is no limit on how many times the knowledge test can be taken.

  • If the driver is 16 or older, driving with any valid licensed driver over the age of 21 in the passenger seat is permitted, except from midnight to 6 a.m., when the driver must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • The parent, guardian, or licensed driver in the passenger seat shall not be intoxicated.
  • All passengers and the driver must wear safety belts.
