Behind-The-Wheel Driving Requirements For Colorado

Published on 2022-09-06 in Driving Lessons

If you are applying to get your driver's license in the state of Colorado, then you must first complete certain criteria required by the Colorado DMV, which includes taking a drivers ed course and getting behind-the-wheel drivers training. For the behind-the-wheel drivers training, many teens and parents want to know how many hours of driving lessons are required in Colorado. We address those behind-the-wheel driving requirements below.

Behind-The Wheel Drivers Training

For Colorado, the state requires you to do a minimum of 56 hours of behind-the-wheel driving lessons and practice. With those 56 hours, it is broken down into different requirements, which are here:

  • 6 hours - You must complete six hours of behind-the-wheel driving with a professional driving instructor
  • 50 hours - You must also complete at least 50 hours of behind-the-wheel practice

We breakdown the behind-the-wheel driving requirements for teens trying to get their driver's license in Colorado.

Behind-The-Wheel Practice

So, what does behind-the-wheel practice mean? For the 50 hours, it is practicing your driving skills with a licensed driver. Ten of the 50 hours must be completed at night. The licensed driver you complete these 50 hours with must be 21 years or older and:

  • Holds a valid drivers license
  • Sits in the passenger seat up front
  • However, only the person who signed the DR2460 when you got your permit can log your 50 hours of driving time

Once all of these hours are completed, you will be able to head to the Colorado DMV and take your behind-the-wheel drive test to obtain your Minor License, which is valid until 20 days after your 21st birthday!
