I'm a Senior Driver. Can I Still Take Driving Lessons?

We know there numerous reasons senior drivers may want to take driving lessons, from general review to getting a feel for the road after time off from driving or even due to a state-mandated road test. Whatever your age or experience, Coastline is here to help you every step of the way!

Certain states may require that drivers of a specific age or medical/driving history undergo period re-testing to renew the driver's license. For instance, in California, drivers may be asked to undergo a Supplemental Driving Performance Evaluation (SPDE), which is another way of saying a road test with a few extra steps.

What Should I Expect From a Lesson?

We know taking a behind-the-wheel lesson as a more experienced driver can be an awkward experience. Coastline instructors will start your lesson with an evaluation of your current driving skills and then review how those skills intersect with what your state driving agency expects from a possible supplemental road test. In this way, we can identify skills that may need refinement before an evaluation or just getting back on the road after some time off. Common adjustments we see in more experienced drivers include additional over-the-shoulder checks, complete stops at stop signs, and perfecting the lane change.

State Driving Agencies expect drivers that are retesting to be able to translate traffic laws into actual practice while operating a motor vehicle on public roads.
