What Do They Test During Behind-The-Wheel Driving Test In Nevada?
If you have finished all the requirements needed when applying for a driver's license in Nevada, then the final step before getting your Nevada driver's license would be to take (and pass) the behind-the-wheel driving test. We know you are nervous, as you want to pass it on the first attempt. The key to passing is being prepared, as this will help calm your nerves and help you remain calm and confident during your test. So, what do they test during the behind-the-wheel test in Nevada? We have the details below!
Up First: Pre-Driving Checklist
After making your appointment for your road test, you will want to make sure you have the current registration and proof of insurance for the vehicle you will be using for the test. You will need to present these at the DMV when you check in for your appointment. You will also need to make sure your vehicle meets all of the state requirements:
- A windshield with no cracks or debris that would obstruct the view
- At least 1/2 a tank of gas
- Tires properly inflated
- Driver and passenger doors that open and close properly from inside and outside
- Working lights: headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals, as well as a working horn and rearview mirror
- Two red tail lamps in the rear that are visible from 500 feet
- Rear stop lamps that display a red, amber, or yellow light
- Turn signals located at the front and rear of vehicle
- License plate to illuminate rear license plate
- Equipped muffler in good working order
- Self-operating windshield wipers capable of effectively clearing the windshield
If your vehicle does not meet all of these requirements, the examiner will not allow you to take the driving test. If everything looks good, it is time to begin the actual road test.
Next Up: The Actual Road Test
When it comes to the driving portion of the test, you want to make sure to follow all the instructions the examiner gives you. You will be asked to perform a number of different maneuvers and drive in different areas of town, including business districts, residential districts, through intersections and more. The examiner will also take you through three school zones during the test to see how you react, whether you slow down or not.
For scoring, it is based on how you do within each section. Here are some of the maneuvers you may be asked to perform:
- Locating the controls.
- Use of signals.
- Checking your blind spots.
- Proper driving posture.
- Smooth stops and accelerations.
- Backing up.
- Obeying stop signs and traffic lights.
- 3-point turns.
- Reverse 2-point parking. Where you drive past the parking space and then back into the space.
- Yielding the right-of-way.
- Stopping at a curb.
- Signal and turn: get into the proper lane and signal your turn for the last 200 feet. Right and left turns will be on your test. Even though they're basic, don't forget to practice these.
- Passing other vehicles and changing lanes.
- Staying in the correct lanes.
- Proper following distance.
- Proper speed.
- Stop quickly: be able to make a quick and safe stop when the examiner instructs you to at 20 mph.
During the road test, you want to make sure you are watching for bike lanes and pedestrians. You should also remember to check your mirrors, in addition, to actually turning and looking.
What Happens Next?
If you passed the test, you will go back to the DMV office and they will issue you a temporary license and the actual driver license will be mailed to you. If you failed, no need to worry. Not everyone passes on their first attempt. You can retake the exam until you pass, so you just need to schedule another appointment at least one day later and work on practicing those driving skills in the meantime. Keep in mind the examiner's feedback during the test and work on those points.
